Oracle of Ages is a wonderful clone of the classic Zelda games. Most similar to Link to the Past, OoA consists of two huge overworlds: the past and present. Graphics are better than most GB games, which means that this game looks slightly better than crap. Music, sound, and controls turn out above average. And of course, the classic Zelda gameplay returns bigger and better than ever.

There is a story for the game, but it’s only as complex as any other Zelda story. The gameplay is what rules this game, and boy does it ever rule. Classic Zelda gameplay this good hasn’t been seen since Link to the Past: tons of items, puzzles, enemies, and dungeons. Unlike Oracle of Seasons, this game is more puzzle oriented, pushing the action to the background. Puzzles are thrown at you almost constantly, ranging from simple to very hard. Dungeons are done brilliantly by implementing all kinds of puzzles and tricks. The usual Zelda fighting is definitely still around.

You can find all of the classic Zelda items to use in OoA. The bow, bombs, boomerang, and other items are hidden inside dungeons for your plundering hands. Magic rings make a new appearance to give more depth to treasure hunting and character abilities. More than fifty rings can be found, each one giving Link some kind of special ability that ranges from dumb to extremely useful. (Morphing into an octorok comes to mind as being dumb). Dungeon bosses are on the tricky side and require specific strategies to beat. I was pleased to find out all of the bosses were brand new and totally distinct from one another.

Oracle of Ages turns out to be a really fun game true to the Zelda name. There is so much to do and so many places to explore that you will be playing this game for a long time. It is yet another new Zelda adventure that is packed with enough fresh material to stay entertaining. If you also have Oracle of Seasons, you can exchange passwords between the two games to find even more secrets.
