1602 AD is one of those games that you sincerely hate but just can’t stop playing because it is so addicting. I played the single player mode for three weeks and it got more frustrating each game. Add in sparse graphics and sound and a user-unfriendly interface and you get a game that will annoy you to death.
The game is very similar to Age of Empires, except that 1602 AD excels at sucking. Whereas AOE is based on building a town and going to war, this game is about building a town and listening to how your people hate your guts. The first half of the gameplay involves constructing buildings that all look alike, planting fields of crops, and trying to make life comfortable for the people. It turns out to be a tedious, clumsy way of building a city and balancing your resources to keep the people happy. If you don’t keep them happy, they get pissed and your city reverts down to the last age. This is a bad thing because you lose certain abilities and buildings until you get back up to par.
Just about all of your resources are used to please the greedy bastards, so you hardly have anything left to go to war with. Most of the levels are nothing but small chains of islands, promoting tons of boat use. Unfortunately, this makes the game even worse. You have to transport people to other islands that don’t have enough room for a shack, in hopes of cultivating the land and the special crop of each island. That is another problem: each island has its own particular crop. Since you need a balance of all resources this means that you have to cultivate at least more than one island. Since there are a dozen types of crops and resources that your city requires, all of your game time is devoted to gathering crap while the peasants take your money.
There is a warfare part to this game, although you might not notice it. Building the city and keeping the people happy is near impossible, yet you are also supposed to create a military to fight the... other people colonizing America? I don’t remember reading about colonists waging war, but oh well. They are probably just trying to borrow a few bales of cotton to appease their peasants. As for the other bad parts to this game: the graphics are bland, the music is lame, and just about everything else is crappy. I don’t suggest playing this game unless you like getting pissed off, because this game is only good for exploding your temper.
